Iziumov, Ovsii

Iziumov, Ovsii [Ізюмов, Овсій; Izjumov, Ovsij], b 3 July 1899 in Vershany, Oleksandriia county, Kherson gubernia, d December 1937 in Kyiv. Linguist, lexicographer. He compiled three popular dictionaries: Slovnyk rosiis'ko-ukraïns'kyi (A Russian-Ukrainian Dictionary, 3 edns, 1926, 1927), Ukraïns'ko-rosiis'kyi slovnyk (A Ukrainian-Russian Dictionary, 1930), and Pravopysnyi slovnyk (An Orthographic Dictionary, 1931), which diverged in some respects from the standard established by the State Orthographic Commission of Kharkiv in 1929. He wrote works on Ukrainian word formation and courses in Ukrainian grammar. He was a coauthor of Slovnyk chuzhomovnykh sliv (A Dictionary of Foreign Words, 1932). He was arrested during the Yezhov terror in 1937 and subsequently executed.
