Kabachok, Volodymyr

Kabachok, Volodymyr [Кабачок, Володимир; Kabačok], b 15 July 1892 in Petrivtsi, Myrhorod county, Poltava gubernia, d 15 June 1957 in Kyiv. Banduryst. After formal training at the Poltava Music School (1913–17) and the Moscow Conservatory, he became an organizer, player and artistic director (1925–34) of the Poltava Banduryst Chorus. He was briefly arrested in 1934 and then served as a director of the Bolshoi Theater orchestra in Leningrad (also establishing a bandruryst chorus among Ukrainian dock workers there). Rearrested in 1937, he was sent to a forced labor camp in the Kolyma region until 1943. In 1944 he was a soloist and folk-instrument choir director for the Tashkent Philharmonic Orchestra. He returned to Kyiv in 1945 and taught in the Reinhold Glière Music School and then the Kyiv Conservatory. At the same time he became a prominent soloist with the Verovka State Chorus and director of its folk musical instrument orchestra.
