Kirkor, Adam

Kirkor, Adam, b 21 January 1818 in Slyvyn, now in Mahiliou oblast, Belarus, d 23 November 1886 in Cracow. Polish scholar, specializing in the history, archeology, ethnography, literature, and language of Lithuania, Belarus, and Ukraine. Kirkor excavated kurhans in western Podilia and Pokutia, and made important archeological findings in Vasylkivtsi and Kotsiubyntsi, in the Ternopil region. He explored the artificial caves (Dovbush’s Caves) near Stryi in the Lviv region. He is the author of Litva i Ruś pod względem historycznym, geograficznym, statystycznym i archeologicznym (Lithuania and Rus' from a Historical, Geographical, Statistical, and Archeological Viewpoint, 1875) and of an outline of Ukrainian literature, O literaturze pobratymczych narodów słowiańskich (Concerning the Literature of the Fraternal Slavic Peoples, 1874).
