Kobrynsky, Volodymyr

Kobrynsky, Volodymyr [Кобринський, Володимир; Kobryns'kyj], b 16 October 1873 in Bilozirka, Zbarazh county, Galicia, d 17 October 1958 in Kolomyia, Ivano-Frankivsk oblast. Civic and cultural figure; ethnographer. Under the Western Ukrainian National Republic he was active in Kolomyia’s local government. He founded a branch of the Lviv Silskyi Hospodar society in the Hutsul region and was a member of the National Committee of the Ukrainian National Democratic Alliance. In 1926 Kobrynsky founded the Hutsulshchyna Museum in Kolomyia (today the Kolomyia Museum of Hutsul Folk Art), which he directed for many years. He collected Hutsul folklore and folk art and wrote a book on Hutsul brass handicrafts.
