Kondra, Peter

Kondra, Peter [Кондра, Петро], b 30 July 1911 in Mikado, Saskatchewan, d 22 July 2011 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Poultry scientist and community leader. Educated at the universities of Manitoba (in Winnipeg) and Minnesota (in Minneapolis, PH D 1953), Kondra joined the faculty of the University of Manitoba in 1946 as a specialist in poultry genetics. He published numerous articles on poultry breeding, incubation, and housing. An active member of the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church of Canada, the Ukrainian Self-Reliance League, and the Ukrainian Canadian Professional and Business Federation, he served as president of the Ukrainian Canadian Committee (1971–4) and at the same time sat on the executive of the World Congress of Free Ukrainians. He also served as principal of Saint Andrew's College in Winnipeg and spearheaded its affiliation with the University of Manitoba and the creation of the Centre for Ukrainian Canadian Studies at the university.
