Kononovych, Oleksander

Kononovych, Oleksander [Кононович, Олександер; Kononovyč], b 31 January 1850 in Tahanrih, d 5 May 1910 in Odesa. Astronomer. A graduate of New Russia University (1871), from 1886 he was a professor at that university. From 1881 he also headed the Odesa Astronomical Observatory, which, under his leadership, became an important scientific research facility. A pioneer of astronomy in the Russian Empire, Kononovych contributed mainly in the areas of solar-system studies and studies of binary star systems.
