Levchenko, Hryhorii

Levchenko, Hryhorii [Левченко, Григорій; Levčenko, Hryhorij], b 30 November 1901 in Novoselytsia, Skvyra county, Kyiv gubernia, d 19 February 1944 in Kyiv. Linguist. A graduate of the Kyiv Institute of People's Education (1926), he was a docent at Kharkiv University and, later, Kyiv University. Levchenko wrote a number of pioneering works on 19th-century literary Ukrainian (see Standard Ukrainian), including an article on Taras Shevchenko’s role in the history of the literary Ukrainian language (1939) and Narysy z istoriï ukraïns'koï literaturnoï movy pershoï polovyny XIX st. (Essays on the History of Literary Ukrainian in the First Half of the 19th Century, 1946).
