Myrovych, Ivan M.

Myrovych, Ivan M. [Мирович, Іван; Myrovyč], b ?, d 1709. Cossack leader of the Myrovych Cossack starshyna family; father of Fedir Myrovych and Ivan I. Myrovych. A notable military fellow from 1689, he was appointed colonel of Pereiaslav regiment (1691–1706) by Hetman Ivan Mazepa. He took part in numerous campaigns, particularly against the Tatars. During the Great Northern War he was acting hetman of a 10,000-man Cossack army in Volhynia. He was taken prisoner by the Swedes near Liakhavichy, in Belarus, in the spring of 1706, and died in Swedish captivity. He was a patron of Ukrainian church art and funded the construction (1704–9) of the Church of the Holy Protectress in Pereiaslav.
