Nahaievsky, Isydor

Nahaievsky, Isydor or Nahayewsky, Isidore [Нагаєвський, Ісидор; Nahajevs'kyj], b 21 June 1908 in Polivtsi, Chortkiv county, Galicia, d 7 May 1989 in Parma, Ohio. Ukrainian Catholic priest and historian. In 1939 he was a political prisoner in the Polish concentration camp in Bereza Kartuzka. During the Second World War he was imprisoned by the NKVD and the Gestapo. From 1943 to 1945 he served as a chaplain with the Division Galizien, and from 1945–7, in a prisoner of war camp; subsequently he emigrated to the United States of America. Nahaievsky received his PH D from the Ukrainian Free University in 1953 and was a professor at the Ukrainian Catholic University (Rome). He wrote books in Ukrainian on the mission and impact of Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius in Rus’-Ukraine (1954), Rome and Byzantium (1956), Prince Iziaslav Yaroslavych and the papal see (1957), ancient Ukraine as reflected in historical monuments (1961), the history of the Roman Catholic pontiffs (3 vols, 1964, 1967, 1979), and the origin and significance of patriarchates (1973). He also wrote History of Ukraine (1962), History of the Modern Ukrainian State, 1917–1923 (1966), and memoirs of Bereza Kartuzka (1957), the interwar years (1960), and the Division Galizien (1985).
