Nirod, Fedir

Nirod, Fedir [Нірод, Федір], b 31 April 1907 in Saint Petersburg, d 6 September 1996 in Kyiv. Theatrical set designer. He completed study at the Kyiv State Art Institute in 1930, and in 1934–45 he worked as stage designer in the Zankovetska Theater (from 1944 the Lviv Ukrainian Drama Theater). In 1950 he started working for the Lviv Theater of Opera and Ballet, and in 1961 he became principal designer of the Kyiv Theater of Opera and Ballet. In all, he created scenery for over 150 productions, combining elements of constructivism and productionism in his designs (as in K. Gutzkow’s Uriel Akosta for the Zankovetska Theater). Later he became more conservative (as in Peter Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake). A biography, by M. Panfilova, was published in Kyiv in 1969.
