Pavlenko, Yurii

Pavlenko, Yurii or Heorhii [Павленко, Юрій or Георгій], b 25 March 1898 in Lebiazhe, Zmiiv county, Kharkiv gubernia, d 4 March 1970 in Kyiv. Scientist in the fields of hydromechanics and the mechanics of ships; full member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR from 1961. He graduated from the Leningrad Polytechnical Institute (1924) and served as a scientific adviser during the siege of Leningrad in the Second World War. He worked at the Odesa Institute of Naval Engineers (1944–58) and the Institute of Hydromechanics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1958–62) and as a shipbuilding consultant in the Odesa region. His main contributions were in the fields of hydrostatics and hydrodynamics, particularly water friction on hulls, marine power plants, naval automation, and ship safety.
