Rozumnyj, Jaroslav

Rozumnyj, Jaroslav [Розумний, Ярослав], b 6 September 1925 in Vychilky (now Honcharivka), Buchach county, Galicia, d 8 December 2013 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Ukrainian-Canadian literary scholar and community figure. A postwar émigré, he arrived in Canada in 1951 and subsequently graduated from the University of Ottawa (1958; PH D, 1968). He taught Ukrainian literature at Laurentian University (1960–3) and the University of Manitoba (from 1964), where he also was the head of the department of Slavic studies. He presided over the Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Centre in Winnipeg (1968–73) and the Ukrainian Academy of Arts and Sciences in Canada (1977–80). From 1995 he served as dean of the Faculty of Philosophy of the Ukrainian Free University in Munich. His articles on Ukrainian literature appeared in Ukrainian émigré and Canadian scholarly periodicals.
