Rykov, Valerian

Rykov, Valerian [Риков, Валеріян], b 14 June 1874 in Tbilisi, Georgia, d 25 March 1942 in Kyiv. Architect. After graduating from the Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts (1902) he lectured at the Kyiv Polytechnical Institute (1904–10). He was one of the founders of and a professor at the Kyiv Architecture Institute (1918–23) and a lecturer at and, eventually (1934–9), the chairman of the architecture department at the Kyiv State Art Institute. He designed many residential and public buildings in Kyiv, including the People’s Auditorium (1909), the building of the Saint Mary’s Society of the Red Cross (1913), the Kyiv Hippodrome (1916), and the Kyiv Artistic Film Studio (1927–30). P. Makushenko’s book about him was published in Kyiv in 1967.
