Shekeryk-Donykiv, Petro

Shekeryk-Donykiv, Petro [Шекерик-Доників, Петро; Šekeryk-Donykiv], b 20 April 1889 in Holove, Kosiv county, Galicia, d ? in Siberia. Hutsul civic and political leader. He was active in the Sich societies movement, Hnat Khotkevych’s Hutsul Theater, and the Ukrainian Radical party. He was a member of the Ukrainian National Rada in Stanyslaviv in 1918–19 and a delegate to the Labor Congress in Kyiv. An effective speaker, he was elected deputy to the Polish Sejm (1928–30) and mayor of Zhabie (1933–9). He was arrested by the Soviets in 1940 and deported to Siberia, where he disappeared. He collected ethnographic materials on the Hutsuls and the Hutsul region and wrote short stories about the opryshoks.
