Tkachenko, Mykhailo S. [Ткаченко, Михайло; Tkačenko, Myxajlo], b 18 November 1860 in Kharkiv, d 2 January 1916 near Sloviansk, Bakhmut county, Katerynoslav gubernia. Painter. He studied at the Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts and then under F. Cormon at the Académie des beaux arts in Paris (1888–92). He remained in Paris until 1914 and from there visited Ukraine each year. A specialist in landscapes and seascapes, he created canvases such as Landscape in Kharkiv Gubernia, Donets River, By the Road, Village Cemetery (1887), Sunset on the Sea (1901), Incoming Waves (1902–6), and Spring (1907). His works, many of which depict Ukraine, were exhibited in Paris (solo exhibition in 1909) and have been preserved in museums in Kharkiv, Lviv, Paris, Liège, and Toulon. He also painted a landscape mural for the library of the Poltava Zemstvo Building and other canvases there (1903–8). A monograph about him was published in 1963.
