Ukraїns'kyi kalendar
Ukraїns'kyi kalendar [«Український календар»; Ukrainian Calendar]. An annual calendar (kalendar) published in 1959–88 in Warsaw by the Ukrainian Social and Cultural Society (USKT). From 1962 to 1988 it was edited by Antin Serednytsky. It was a popular informative miscellany that was distributed among Ukrainians in the Eastern Bloc countries and was known to Ukrainians in the West as well. Even though adhering to the official ideology of Marxism-Leninism, it covered a wide range of topics pertaining to religion, history, literature, art, and culture. It commemorated anniversaries of prominent Ukrainian and foreign writers, artists, cultural figures, politicians, and military leaders. The calendar paid considerable attention to Polish-Ukrainian relations, cultural history, and achievements in science and technology; it published materials for youth and children, articles on agriculture, practical advice, and humor.
Ukraїns'kyi kalendar published classic works of Ukrainian, Polish, and Russian literature, poetry and prose of the Ukrainian shistdesiatnyky, translations of world literature (including works by Dante Alighieri, Ludovico Ariosto, Francesco Petrarcha, Heinrich Heine, and others). It also published poems by Bohdan Ihor Antonych that were banned in the Ukrainian SSR; works by Bohdan Lepky, Mykola Khvylovy, and Vasyl Symonenko; and biographies of Oleksander Rusov, Serhii Yefremov, Roman Smal-Stotsky, and others.
The publication series Biblioteka Ukraїns'koho kalendara (the Library of Ukraїns'kyi kalendar) published some 20 volumes of prose and poetry by Ukrainian authors.
This publication was distinguished by a high quality of its graphic design. It featured numerous artworks by Ukrainian and Polish artists, including Viktor Koretsky, Oleksa Novakivsky, Sofiia Karaffa-Korbut, Roman Selsky, Yevhen Beznisko, Feodosii Humenіuk, Oleksii Dufanets, Opanas Zalyvakha, Mykola Stratilat, Yurii Lohvyn, Andriy Mentukh, Ivan Ostafiychuk, Leopold Levytsky, and others. Lemko region art was represented by reproductions of paintings by Andy Warhol and Nykyfor, and photographs of wood carvings by Hryhorii Petsukh.
