Vasyliv, Mykhailo

Vasyliv, Mykhailo [Васильїв, Михайло; Vasyl'jiv, Myxajlo], b 1863 in Lebedyn, Kharkiv gubernia, d 10 May 1912 in Kyiv. Ethnographer and engineer; member of the Ukrainian Scientific Society from 1909; father of Mykola Vasyliv. A graduate of the Saint Petersburg Institute of Technology, he specialized in sugar refining and wrote over 50 works in the field. He also collected folklore and ethnographic materials. In the 1880s and 1890s he contributed articles on folk songs, folk theater, burial rites, and folk beliefs to Kievskaia starina and Etnograficheskoe obozrenie.
