Velychko, Hryhorii

Velychko, Hryhorii [Величко, Григорій; Velyčko, Hryhorij], b 21 October 1863 in Mykolaiv (Lviv region), Galicia, d 1932 in Kharkiv. Economist and historian; member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society from 1899. He taught in Galician gymnasiums and published many popular works and articles on Ukrainian geography and economics, including an article on the political and trade relations between Rus’ and Byzantium in the 10th and 11th centuries (ZNTSh, vol 6, 1891), a demographic map of the Ukrainian-Ruthenian people (1896), and an entry on Galicia in the Russian-language encyclopedia published by Brockhaus and Efron (vol 14, 1892). He moved to Soviet Ukraine in 1925 and initially taught at Uman Agricultural Institute. Invited by Stepan Rudnytsky to join the latter’s Ukrainian Scientific Research Institute of Geography and Cartography in Kharkiv, Velychko worked as a section head in that institute. He was arrested during the Stalinist terror and executed.
