Yakubovsky, Volodymyr

Yakubovsky, Volodymyr [Якубовський, Володимир; Jakubovs'kyj; nom de guerre: Bondarenko], b 1915 in Zaliztsi, Zboriv county, Galicia, d 17 June 1947 in Kozova raion, Ternopil oblast. Senior commander of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). In 1942–3 he organized military training for members of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, and in December 1943 he became chief of staff of the Third Military District (Ternopil oblast) of the UPA-West. In 1944 he also directed a noncommissioned officer school in his district and led a UPA battalion on a combat raid. Then he commanded the Lysonia (3rd) Group of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (1945–7) and was promoted to the military rank of major. He was killed in combat with MVD troops.
