Hursky, Jacob [Гурський, Яків; Hurs'kyj, Jakiv], b 4 November 1923 in Zholdaky, Chernihiv gubernia, d 28 February 1995 in Syracuse, New York State USA. Linguist. After the Second World War he emigrated to the United States of America and received his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania (1957). He taught at the University of Syracuse. He is noted for his studies in Ukrainian anthroponymics, specifically on peculiarities of Cossack family names in the 17th century and on the language of 16th-century texts.
