Żółkiewski, Stanisław, b 1547 in Turynka (near Lviv), d 7 October 1620 near Cecora, Moldavia. Polish state and military figure. His crown positions included field hetman (from 1588), grand hetman (from 1613), castellan of Lviv (from 1590), and chancellor (from 1618). He led the Polish expeditionary force that brutally suppressed the uprisings of the Cossacks led by Severyn Nalyvaiko, Matvii Shaula, and Hryhorii Loboda at the Battle of Solonytsia in 1596. He was killed fighting the Turks at the Battle of Cecora.
