Lukiianovych, Denys [Лукіянович, Денис; Lukijanovyč; pseudonyms: L. Zhurbenko, Ivan Levytsky, Ivan Makukha], b 13 September 1873 in Horodnytsia, Husiatyn county, Galicia, d 28 January 1965 in Lviv. Writer, literary scholar, publicist, and pedagogue. For many years he worked as a secondary-school teacher in Bukovyna and Galicia. After the Second World War he was appointed professor of Ukrainian literature at Lviv University. His first published book was the collection Noveli (Novellas, 1895). In addition to a large number of short stories he wrote several novelettes: Za Kadyl'nu (For Kadylna, 1902) and Vid kryvdy (From Injustice, 1904), both dealing with peasant life; Filister (Philistine, 1909), about teachers and the middle class; Franko i Berkut (Franko and Berkut, 1956), a biographical work; and Ia – z bil'shistiu (I Am with the Majority, 1934), a satirical novel. As a literary scholar he wrote numerous articles and studies, in particular about Yurii Fedkovych, Taras Shevchenko, and Ivan Franko.
