Orlyk, Stepan [Орлик, Степан], b 9 January 1891 in Chudniv (?), Volhynia gubernia, d 2 June 1938 in Zhytomyr. Archbishop of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox church (UAOC). He graduated from the theological academy in Paris, and was ordained in 1916 in Volhynia. He served as a priest in Tbilisi, Georgia (1917–21). He returned to Ukraine and was active in the rebirth of the Ukrainian Orthodox church. At the first sobor of the UAOC (October 1921) he was consecrated bishop and appointed archbishop of Volhynia okruha (1921–3), with his see in Zhytomyr. Orlyk organized nearly 50 parishes of the UAOC in the region and then was appointed to Berdychiv okruha (Berdychiv and Shepetivka, 1925–7). In the course of his work he continually battled the Soviet regime and the clergy of the Moscow patriarchate (of the Russian Orthodox church). In 1927 the authorities demanded that he be removed, and in 1928 he was arrested and exiled for 10 years to the Solovets Islands. After completing his sentence he returned to Zhytomyr, where he was once again arrested. He became blind from maltreatment, and eventually died in prison in Zhytomyr.
