Rolle, Antoni Józef (pseudonym: Dr Antoni J.), b 1830 in Henrykivka (now Rolia), near Sharhorod, Mohyliv (now Mohyliv-Podilskyi) county, Podilia gubernia, d 21 January 1894 in Kamianets-Podilskyi, Podilia gubernia. Historian and physician; son of a Polonized French immigrant. He completed his studies in Kyiv (1855) and worked as a doctor in Kamianets-Podilskyi (from 1861). He wrote a series of essays and semifictional works about Right-Bank Ukraine during the 16th to 19th centuries, using documents he sought out in the archives of H. Lubomirski’s estate. His major work was Zameczki podolskie na kresach multańskich (Podilian Fortresses on the Borders of the Muntenia Region, 3 vols, 1869). A number of his stories appeared in Kievskaia starina in translation.
