Shankovsky, Amvrosii [Шанковський, Амвросій; Šankovs'kyj, Amvrosij; pen names: Perekonos, Hermohen, Ponomarev Hermohen, Starshyi sviashchenyk], b December 1832 in Lopatyn, Zolochiv circle, Galicia, d 7 May 1906 in Chernivtsi, Bukovyna. Greek Catholic priest, civic leader, and publicist. After completing his theological education in Vienna and Lviv (1856) he taught at gymnasiums in Stanyslaviv, Kolomyia, and Chernivtsi and contributed numerous poems, short stories, humorous sketches, and articles under various initials and pseudonyms to papers such as Holos narodnyi (1866), Hazeta shkol’na (1875), Rodimyi listok (1880), and Halytskaia Rus’ (1891–2). He translated German-language textbooks and revised them for the use of Ukrainian students (1879–86). His recollections, published in Rodimyi listok (1880–3), are a valuable source for Galician history of the 1840s.
