Shatkivsky, Oleksa [Шатківський, Олекса; Šatkivs'kyj], b 28 May 1908 in Pochaiv, Kremianets county, Volhynia gubernia, d 28 June 1979 in Lviv. Painter and printmaker. While studying at the Warsaw Academy of Arts (1931–9) he belonged to the Spokii group of Ukrainian artists. After the Second World War he taught at the Lviv Institute of Applied and Decorative Art (1948–56) and the Ukrainian Printing Institute in Lviv (1950–6). He painted many landscapes of Volhynia, the Carpathian Mountains, and Lviv, including Apiary (1951), Lenin Avenue in Lviv (1967), and Carpathian Landscape (1968), and created many lithographs and engravings. Expressionist influences are evident in his work. Catalogs of retrospective and posthumous exhibitions of his works were published in 1969 and 1981.
