Shekhtman, Manuil [Шехтман, Мануїл; Šextman, Manuïl], b 2 February 1900 in Lypnyky, Ovruch county, Volhynia gubernia, d 1941. Painter. He studied at the Kyiv Art School (1913–20) and under Mykhailo Boichuk at the Kyiv State Art Institute (1922–7). In the 1920s he belonged to the Association of Revolutionary Art of Ukraine. From 1934 he worked in Moscow. His easel paintings include Pogrom Victims (1927), Expulsion of the Jews (1927), Refugees (1929), and Horrors of War (1938). Under Boichuk’s supervision he painted the frescoes Corvée and Harvest Festival at the Peasant Sanatorium in Odesa in 1928. The were condemned as ‘nationalist formalist’ and destroyed.
