Yastrebov, Fedir [Ястребов, Федір; Jastrebov], b 28 November 1903 in Sudogda, Vladimir gubernia, d 30 June 1973 in Kyiv. Historian. He graduated from Kyiv University (1926) and then worked at the All-Ukrainian Association of Marxist-Leninist Scientific Research Institutes, the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (in the Department of Marxism-Leninism), and the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1936–63). He researched the sociopolitical history of Ukraine in the 19th century, especially Ukrainian revolutionary movements. He also coauthored general surveys of Ukrainian history, including Kyïvs'ka Rus’ i feodal'ni kniazivstva XII–XIII st. (Kyivan Rus’ and the Feudal Principalities of the 12th–13th Centuries, 1939; with Kost Huslysty), Narys istoriï Ukraïny (Outline of the History of Ukraine, 1942; with Lazar Slavin and Huslysty), and Istoriia Ukraïny: Korotkyi kurs (History of Ukraine: A Brief Course, 1941; with S. Belousov, Huslysty, Oleksander Ohloblyn, Mykola Petrovsky, and Mykola Suprunenko), in which he wrote the chapters on Ukraine in the early 19th century and on the development of capitalism in Ukraine. In 1947 he was criticized by the Central Committee of the Communist Party (Bolshevik) of Ukraine for ‘examining the history of the Ukrainian people independently from the history of other peoples of the Soviet Union.’ After the Second World War Yastrebov contributed chapters on 18th- and 19th-century Ukraine to two editions of Istoriia Ukraïns'koï RSR (The History of the Ukrainian SSR, vol 1, 1953; 2nd edn 1967) and chapters on the sociopolitical movements in 19th-century Kyiv to Istoriia Kyieva (History of Kyiv, vol 1, 1960).
