Zarudny, Serhii [Зарудний, Сергій; Zarudnyj, Serhij], b 29 March 1821 in Kolodiazne, Kupiansk county, Kharkiv gubernia, d 30 December 1887 near Nice, France. Legal scholar of Ukrainian descent, senator, and prominent jurist. After graduating in mathematics from Kharkiv University (1842) he took a position in the justice ministry in Moscow and, in 1849, became its chief consultant. He played a key role in the judicial reform of 1864, which liberalized the Russian legal system. He wrote a number of studies, including Sudebnye ustavy s rassuzhdeniiami, na koikh oni osnovany (Court Statutes with the Reasoning on Which They Are Based, 1866) and Grazhdanskoe ulozhenie italianskogo korolevstva i russkie grazhdanskie zakony (The Civil Code of the Italian Kingdom and Russian Civil Laws, 1870), and translated Beccaria and Dante.
