Zaskelna archeological site [Заскельна стоянка; Zaskelna stoianka]. A multi-occupational Paleolithic site near Bilohirsk, Crimea. Excavations in 1969–78 produced numerous flint tools (including biface hand axes dating back to the Mousterian culture) and weapons, traces of fires, and wild animal bones, including very rare for that time period remains of a Black Sea dolphin. The site is best known for the discovery of a Neanderthal burial and the recovery of fragments of a Neanderthal skull. The age of the 7 archeological strata discovered in Zaskelna ranges from 120,000 to 25,000 years.
