Makarushka, Liubomyr [Макарушка, Любомир; Makaruška, Ljubomyr], b 12 August 1899 in Sivka Voinylivska, Kalush county, Galicia, d 6 February 1986 in Bad Godesberg, Germany. Political and military leader; son of Ostap Makarushka and Yevheniia Makarushka. After graduating from the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt he served briefly in the Austrian army and then as captain in the First (Stanyslaviv) Battalion of the Ukrainian Galician Army. After the First World War he studied economics at the World Trade Academy in Vienna (PH D, 1927). Upon his return to Lviv he served as executive director and then general secretary (1927–9) of the Ukrainian National Democratic Alliance (UNDO) and in 1930 was elected as its candidate to the Polish Sejm. As a major of the Division Galizien he negotiated the unit’s surrender to the British at the end of the Second World War. From 1948 he represented the UNDO on the émigré Ukrainian National Council and sat on the council’s executive body (1948–51). He also headed the Department for Non-German Refugees at the German Refugee Bank in Bonn (1951–64).
