Stefan of Kyiv

Stefan of Kyiv (Стефан Печерський; Stefan Pecherskyi), b 1040, d 27 April 1094. Churchman. A follower of Saint Theodosius of the Caves, he is mentioned in Povist’ vremennykh lit (ca 1047) as one of the first church singers in Rus’. He later became hegumen of the Kyivan Cave Monastery and a bishop in Volodymyr-Volynskyi (see Volodymyr-Volynskyi eparchy). The Ukrainian Orthodox church considers him a saint; his feast day falls on 10 May (27 April OS).
