Hryd (collective noun, also hrydba; singular—hryden). The junior retainers of a prince in the Kyivan Rus’ period. The hryd performed military service and participated in the administration of princely property. They lived in separate quarters at court. The word is used in the earliest chronicles and bylyny and is probably of Scandinavian origin.
