Khartsiiev, Vasyl [Харцієв, Василь; Xarcijev, Vasyl'], b 12 January 1866 in Katerynoslav, d 29 November 1937 in Kharkiv. Linguist and literary theorist. A graduate of Kharkiv University (1890), he taught at gymnasiums in Kharkiv, Katerynoslav, and Yelysavethrad, and from 1929 at the Kirovohrad Pedagogical Institute. He wrote articles in linguistics, literary theory, and language teaching methods. A student of Oleksander Potebnia, his main achievement was to publish Potebnia’s uncompleted, unpublished manuscripts, particularly the third volume of Iz zapisok po russkoi grammatike (From Notes on Russian Grammar, 1899), and to popularize his ideas.
