Kuropas, Stepan

Kuropas, Stepan [Куропась, Степан; Kuropas'], b 1 October 1900 in Selyska, Peremyshliany county, Galicia, d 11 August 2001 in Chicago. Community leader and journalist; father of Myron Kuropas. A graduate of the Agricultural Engineering Institute in Czechoslovakia (1924), he served as an officer in the Austrian army (1918), the Ukrainian Galician Army (1918–20), and the Polish army (1924–5). Immigrating to the United States of America, in 1930 he became an activist in Ukrainian organizations such as the Ukrainian Professional Association of the United States, the Organization for the Rebirth of Ukraine, and the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America. He was also vice-president and auditor of the Ukrainian National Association (1938–69). Kuropas contributed a regular column to Svoboda (1938–70) and edited Samostiina Ukraïna.
