Normans (normany). A term used by medieval chroniclers for the Germanic tribes inhabiting Scandinavia and Jutland; a common alternative name for the seafaring brigands, mercenaries, and traders known as Vikings in Western Europe and Varangians in Kyivan Rus’ and the Byzantine Empire. The theory of the Varangian origin of Rus’ is known as the Normanist theory.
