Ohonovsky, Volodymyr

Ohonovsky, Volodymyr [Огоновський, Володимир; Ohonovs’kyj], b 9 June 1895 in Nyzhniv, Tovmach county, Galicia, d 16 March 1970 in Lviv. Geographer and political activist; full member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society from 1936. After graduating from Charles University in Prague in 1926, he returned to Galicia and headed the Knyzhka publishing house of the Communist Party of Western Ukraine. He was imprisoned by the Polish authorities for his political activities in 1931–4. After the Second World War he worked at the Institute of Social Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR in Lviv and taught at the Lviv Trade and Economics Institute. He wrote Skhidn’o-evropeis’kyi step (The East European Steppe, 1935) and numerous works on the economic geography of Western Ukraine.
