Pryima-Shmerykovska, Ivanna

Pryima-Shmerykovska, Ivanna [Прийма-Шмериковська, Іванна; Pryjma-Šmerykovs'ka], b 19 January 1898 in Nadvirna, Galicia, d 19 January 1982 in New York. Pianist, singer (mezzo-soprano), and pedagogue; mother of Roma Pryima-Bohachevska. A graduate of the Lviv Conservatory (1920), she continued her studies in Paris and then concertized in Lviv, Warsaw, and Cracow. She taught singing at the Lviv Conservatory from 1937 and was concertmaster at the Lviv Opera Theater in 1942–3. She emigrated to the West after the Second World War, and in 1951–9 taught at the Ukrainian Music Institute of America in New York. Upon retirement, she became the music director of a school in Palm Beach, Florida.
