Roll, Yakiv

Roll, Yakiv [Ролл, Яків], b 2 November 1887 in Luhanske, Slovianoserbsk county, Katerynoslav gubernia, d 3 November 1961 in Kyiv. Botanist and hydrobiologist; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR from 1939. A graduate of Kharkiv University (1913), he taught and worked at the Kharkiv Agricultural Institute (1920–34), the Kyiv Hydrobiological Station (1934–59; from 1939 director of the Institute of Hydrobiology of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR), the Kyiv Forest Management Institute (1930–59), and Kyiv University (1945–53). His research centered on the flora of freshwater algae and the phytoplankton of rivers in Ukraine.
