Savaryn, Nil

Savaryn, Nil (Саварин, Ніль; Neil), b 19 May 1905 in Staryi Sambir, Galicia, d 8 January 1986 in Edmonton. Ukrainian Catholic bishop. Savaryn entered the Basilian monastic order in 1922 and was ordained in 1931. As a missionary in Alberta he taught at the Basilian monastery at Mundare and performed parish duties until 1943, when he was consecrated as Bishop Vasyl Ladyka’s auxiliary. He was named apostolic exarch for Western Canada in 1948, and he became bishop of the newly created eparchy of Edmonton in 1956. He wrote Rolia ottsiv Vasyliianiv u Kanadi (The Role of the Basilian Fathers in Canada, 1939) and edited Propam’iatna knyha z nahody zolotoho iuvileiu poselennia ukraïns'koho narodu v Kanadi (The Commemorative Book on the Occasion of the Golden Anniversary of Ukrainian Settlement in Canada, 1941). As a participant in the Second Vatican Council Savaryn supported the Ukrainian Catholic patriarchate movement.
