Ukrainian Artists' Association in the USA

Ukrainian Artists' Association in the USA [Об’єднання мистців українців в Америці; Obiednannia mysttsiv ukraintsiv v Amerytsi, or ОМУА; OMUA]. An organization of Ukrainian émigré artists in the United States of America, formed in New York in 1952 to promote Ukrainian art outside Ukraine. Its Philadelphia branch (est 1952) has overseen the Ukrainian Art Studio and published the magazine Notatky z mystetstva/Ukrainian Art Digest. Its New York branch (est 1954) has included the Society of Young Ukrainian Artists (est 1955) and a student section (est 1964). OMUA has organized annual group exhibitions, sometimes with the Ukrainian Association of Creative Artists in Canada, and solo shows. It maintains a gallery on its premises in New York. In 1966 OMUA had 59 members. Its presidents have been Serhii Lytvynenko (1952–6 and 1963–4), Sviatoslav Hordynsky (1956–63), Petro Andrusiv (1964–5), Liubomyr Kuzma (1965–73), and Mykhailo Chereshnovsky (1973–94). Its honorary members included Alexander Archipenko, Vasyl H. Krychevsky, and Oleksa Hryshchenko.
