Veselka (Slovakia)

Veselka (Slovakia) [«Веселка»] (Rainbow). A monthly illustrated journal for Ukrainian children in the Prešov region of Slovakia. It first appeared in Russian in September 1951 as Pionerskaia gazeta, published by the Czechoslovak Youth League. From 1953 it was published in Ukrainian as Pioners’ka hazeta, and since 1968 it has been called Veselka. Initially the magazine was published in Bratislava, but since 1965 it has appeared in Košice. Between 1968 and 1990 the journal appeared as a semi-monthly. Since 1990 Veselka has been published by the Union of Ruthenian-Ukrainians of the Slovak Republic. Among its editors have been A. Kopchok, Z. Hanudel, L. Starunska, V. Bodnar, M. Bobak, Yu. Datsko, and I. Yatsykan.
