Ikonnikov, Vladimir [Іконніков, Владімір], b 21 December 1841 in Kyiv, d 26 November 1923 in Kyiv. Historian and academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences from 1914 and the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences from 1920. Ikonnikov finished his studies at Kyiv University in 1865. From 1866 to 1871 he taught at Kharkiv University, various gymnasiums in Odesa, and Odesa University, and from 1871 at Kyiv University. He received his doctorate in 1869 for his dissertation on the cultural influence of Byzantium in Kyivan Rus’. Ikonnikov was one of the founders and the president (1874–7 and 1893–5) of the Historical Society of Nestor the Chronicler. From 1873 to 1913 he was the chief editor of Universitetskie izvestiia at Kyiv University; in 1904 he was made head of the Kyiv Archeographic Commission. He is the author of a number of scholarly works, many of which appeared in Kievskaia starina. His most important work is the encyclopedic two-volume Opyt russkoi istoriografii i ee protivniki (Study of Russian Historiography and Its Opponents, 1891, 1908; the manuscript of the third volume is in the National Library of Ukraine). His major work on Ukrainian history is Kiev v 1654–1855 gg.: Istoricheskii ocherk (Kyiv in 1654–1855: A Historical Survey, 1904).
