Kotliarevsky, Oleksander [Котляревський, Олександер; Kotljarevs'kyj], b 25 September 1837 in Kriukiv (now part of Kremenchuk), Kremenchuk county, Poltava gubernia, d 11 October 1881 in Pisa, Italy. Philologist, archeologist, and ethnographer; corresponding member of the Imperial Academy of Sciences from 1875. A graduate of Moscow and Saint Petersburg (PH D 1874) universities, he was a professor at Dorpat (Tartu) University (1868–72) and at Kyiv University (1875–81). He was a founding member and head of the Historical Society of Nestor the Chronicler at Kyiv University. Kotliarevsky wrote over 100 scholarly bibliographies, articles, and monographs, including O pogrebal'nykh obychaiakh iazycheskikh slavian (On the Burial Rites of Pagan Slavs, 1868). As a student he wrote Ukrainian literary criticism under the pseudonym Skubent Chupryna.
