Nyzhankivsky, Omelian [Нижанківський, Омелян; Nyžankivs'kyj, Omeljan], b 20 August 1895 in Rohatyn, Galicia, d 18 July 1973 in Bern, Switzerland. Pianist, organist, composer, musicologist, conductor, and pedagogue; cousin of Nestor Nyzhankivsky. He was an officer in the Ukrainian Galician Army, and then studied music at Vienna University. Tuberculosis forced him to go to Egypt, where he began teaching at the conservatory in Cairo (1924–8). Later he moved to Switzerland, completed his musical training, and taught at the conservatory in Bern. His compositions include scores for three divine liturgies and numerous sacred works for organ, choir, and voice.
