Zhyttia i slovo (Toronto) (Life and Word). A pro-Soviet newspaper published weekly in Toronto from November 1965 to December 1991 in place of Ukraïns’ke zhyttia (Winnipeg) and Ukraïns’ke slovo (Winnipeg). The organ of the Association of United Ukrainian Canadians (AUUC), it contained political and economic news; reports on the Communist and labor movement in Canada (see Communist Party of Canada); laudatory articles about developments in Soviet Ukraine, particularly in the field of culture; and reports on the activities of the AUUC and the related Workers’ Benevolent Association. Although the paper published articles, especially in the 1960s, criticizing Russification in Ukraine, until the late 1980s it rarely strayed from the official Soviet line on other issues and ignored topics such as the dissident movement, the Famine-Genocide of 1932–3, and the crimes of Stalinism. The paper was edited by a board headed by Mykola Hrynchyshyn; the managing editor was Peter Krawchuk. In 1992 Zhyttia i slovo and the AUUC monthly magazine The Ukrainian Canadian were replaced by a biweekly, bilingual tabloid, Ukrainian Canadian Herald.
