Lavrovsky, Nikolai [Лавровский, Николай; Lavrovskij, Nikolaj], b 4 December 1825 in Vydropusk, Torzhok county, Tver gubernia, Russia, d 1 October 1899 in Kochetok, Zmiiv county, Kharkiv gubernia. Russian philologist and educator; full member of the Imperial Academy of Sciences from 1890. A graduate of the Main Pedagogical Institute in Saint Petersburg, he taught at Kharkiv University (1853–74, professor from 1858) and then served as director of the Nizhyn Historical-Philological Institute (1875–82) and rector of Warsaw University (1889–90). He wrote books on the language of the treaties between Rus’ and the Greeks (MA diss, 1853), on schools in medieval Kyivan Rus’ (PH D diss, 1854), and on Mikhail Lomonosov (1865).
