Pashkevych, Stefaniia

Pashkevych, Stefaniia [Пашкевич, Стефанія; Paškevyč, Stefanija], b 3 November 1889 in Sambir, Galicia, d 11 October 1953 in Lviv. Educator and geographer. She graduated from Lviv University in 1913 and then taught geography at a teachers' seminary and a elementary schools in Lviv. She was also an organizer of the Plast Ukrainian Youth Association and a coeditor of the daily Vpered (Lviv) (1918–22) and the magazine Nasha meta (Lviv) (1919–22). An associate of the mathematics and science section of the Shevchenko Scientific Society, she contributed a chapter on Ukraine’s landscapes and landforms to Volodymyr Kubijovyč’s Heohrafiia Ukraïny i sumezhnykh zemel' (A Geography of Ukraine and Adjacent Lands, 1938). When the Soviets occupied Galicia in 1939, Pashkevych was deported to Siberia (1941–5). Upon returning to Lviv she lectured at Lviv University and wrote a number of morphological studies of Galicia and western Ukraine.
