Popovych, Oleksander O.

Popovych, Oleksander O. [Попович, Олександер; Popovyč], b 1879 in Chernivtsi, Bukovyna, d 1 November 1936 in Drohobych, Galicia. Bukovynian pedagogue and translator; son of Omelian Popovych, brother of Ilko Popovych. He translated into German works by Taras Shevchenko, Marko Vovchok, Ivan Franko, and other Ukrainian writers and wrote the article ‘Deutsche Art im Spiegel ukrainischer Dichtung’ in Ostdeutsche Monatshefte (Berlin 1927, no. 12). With Volodymyr Kushnir he coedited the book Taras Schewtschenko, der grösste Dichter der Ukraine (1914), which included his translations of Shevchenko’s works.
