Katamai, Bohdan

Katamai, Bohdan [Катамай, Богдан; Katamaj], b 10 August 1911 in Yamnytsia, Stanyslaviv county, Galicia, d 2 October 2001 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Journalist, editor, and civic leader. Arriving in the United States of America in 1930, he became a founder and the first president of the Ukrainian Catholic Youth League in America. In 1934 he was elected president of the Society of Mazepists and editor of its monthly journal Holos Mazepyntsiv. Returning to Galicia in 1936, he worked as an editor on the newspaper Ukraïns’ki visty. With the outbreak of Second World War he returned to the United States, and became editor (1943–50) of the newspaper Ameryka (Philadelphia), which he transformed into a daily. At the same time, Katamai served on the executive of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (1941–50) and on the board of directors of the United Ukrainian American Relief Committee (1947–9).
